Lenten Words | Deprivation

During the Lenten Season, many of us choose to give up a certain vice that has, perhaps, dug into the soil of our lives a little too deeply.

TV? Dessert? Shopping? Coffee? Social media?

When does enjoyment of these things become indulgence? - When does indulgence become "necessity"? - When does necessity start to control and demand?

No matter the vice, the feeling is the same when Ash Wednesday passes and with it, our chosen (now-restricted) pleasure:

Deprivation.

It's easy, isn't it, to focus on the void. What we are missing...longing for, even.

But what if this newfound void begets space? Breathing room? Margin that you didn't know you could create in your life?

So then, is it possible to change our focus during Lent from the deprivation of something-- to the opportunity that deprivation births? What if we choose to consciously put something in the place of our vice?

Intentionality? Rest? True connection? Filling? Listening? Prayer?
